Dog Attack on Lisa and Nash

Monday night Lisa was walking Molly and Nash when without warning or provocation, a pit bull hurdled a five foot privacy fence and came after them. He attacked Nash and badly injured him. In trying to protect Nash, Lisa sustained bites to her face and one hand. (For whatever reason, Molly was ignored.)

Bystanders came running to help when they heard Lisa's screams and, after several attempts, were able to get the dog off her. (He came back two more times!) 911 was called and the sheriff and paramedics arrived.

Lisa as I first saw her when I arrived at her home.

After the dog's owners were spoken to and police reports were taken, Lisa and the dogs were brought home. (Lisa didn't want to go in the ambulance because she wanted to be sure that Nash got to the vet and that Molly was with someone she knew and wasn't afraid of.)

Craig and I rushed to her home as did Curt.

Lisa's first concern was Nash - he was hurt worse than she was, so she asked Craig to take him to Purdue University's Vet Hospital. Poor Nashie was in pain and very scared with his tail tucked up against his belly. He moved very slowly and had to be lifted into the car.

One bite went completely through Lisa's lip.

Then it was Lisa's turn - only we had a problem. The in-network hospital that she uses was turning away emergency patients. Why? Because so many folks who've refused to get vaccinated and then gotten COVID were in the hospital and there was no more room or staff to care for emergency patients. (The hospital said that non vaccinated adults made up up 80% of their current COVID patients.)

Not gonna lie, I am still angry now as I type that. My daughter could not get the care that she needed because some people refused the vaccine and now were sick.

Molly tucked up in her bed.

Fortunately there is a second hospital in town that, despite also having a high number of non vaccinated people there who were ill with COVID, could squeeze her in. Curt took Lisa to that hospital while I stayed at the house with Molly.

Like the sheriff and the paramedics, the hospital also documented the dog attack and took photos of Lisa's injuries for the report. She had to be stitched up in several places although they left that long jagged cut open. She is going to need plastic surgery in a few months.

By the time Lisa and Nash finished up at their respective ERs and got home, it was 4:00 in the morning. We went home and fell into bed, exhausted.

Tuesday was a rough day. I went over after just a few hours of sleep and ran errands for Lisa and helped her around the house. She and Nash were both still very traumatized. Nash was in a lot of pain and did not want to move very much.

His body is covered in bite marks that were shaved and treated.

No cone of shame, though, because his vets felt it would rub and irritate the wounds on his neck.

His left hind leg sustained the worst injuries. This is the inside of that leg.

The outside of that leg. I can't blame him for not wanting to walk, poor boy!

Nashie is wearing an old tee shirt now instead of the cone of shame.

Healing is taking place, at least physically, but both Lisa and Nash are pretty traumatized. As for Molly, while she wasn't attacked or injured, she was there and saw her mom and brother get hurt. That has to have been traumatic, too.

Lisa has no idea if the other dog's owners will balk at paying for the bills she is racking up for herself and Nash's medical care. So much to think about.

And please, if you have not been vaccinated yet, reconsider. Your decision may impact others in ways you may not realize.
