Circuits are the basic foundation of electricity and how it powers the things we use in our daily lives. Making lightning bugs with working "taillights" is one way to teach the concept.
I happened to have an extra string of Christmas lights, so I brought it in and let the kids have fun designing their insects.
We colored them first, and some even were embellished with googly eyes, sequins, and other things.
Some children were able to match the color of their lightbulb to that of their firefly.
When the circuit was completed and the tail blinked on, it was a thrill!
Who'd have through you could have so much fun (and learn at the same time), with clothespins, old Christmas lights, and batteries?
It was an easy but memorable way to teach the concept of a circuit.
